Chromebook Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date extended to ten years: read where it is for your Chromebook.

Big news:

Check how long your Chromebook will receive automatic updates

1. At the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
2. At the bottom left, select About ChromeOS.
3. Select Additional details.
4. In the “Update schedule” section, you’ll find when your Chromebook will receive its last update.

_________________________

Note: Go to Settings as described above in #1 and not via the menu in a Chrome tab. They are different. Who knew?

The AUE (Auto Update Expiration) date for my Pixelbook Go has not yet been updated to ten years:

Google Docs needs a single user DBMS like Microsoft Access. Single user, like a spreadsheet program.

I use a Chromebook (Pixelbook from Google) and free Google Docs, mostly its spreadsheet program. I create my spreadsheets on a Google server so I do not need to be concerned about backing up.

Occasionally, I use my Windows 10 Microsoft Surface laptop to run single user database management system (DBMS) Microsoft Access, which came out about 30 years ago. Its basics haven't changed much. In some ways it has regressed. It's ridiculous "ribbon" at the top, which replaces drop down menus, keeps getting more convoluted. What happened to "open tables" I think it was called? Simpler is almost always better.

Also, the Access programming team has not adapted the product for more varied screen resolutions. There are numerous anomalies, including the "ribbon" and "Navigation Pane" (Who knew it was called that?) present with font size that's really small at default resolutions in Windows 10. A solution: Settings "Ease of Access" "Make text bigger" at 170%. Hit the Apply button and Access is now more readable with table and query names in the Navigation Pane larger. The "ribbon" is also larger. Unfortunately, Access error messages are impervious to anything and still have tiny font size. Argh. And the record number info at the bottom gets squeezed vertically to become unreadable. Doesn't Microsoft check this stuff?

Criticism of Access tends to default to it not being multi-user and online. Duh. Would you expect that of a spreadsheet program like Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel?

So why do I use Microsoft Access? Because it supports a relational database structure and query by example. Say what?

Query by example let's you create an ad hoc query based on multiple tables that connect to each other through common keys. A table contains data and is a bit like a spreadsheet in which rows are called records and columns are fields. It can also have a key field, which can contain a unique value, like Social Security number. More on this below.

I use Access for baseball research, which I then present in my blog:

radicalbaseball.blogspot.com

The database I use provides a good example. It contains tables:

People: about 20,000 major league players going back into the 1800s.

Batting: annual data for each player connected to the player via an alphanumeric key field. 110,000 records.

Pitching: same as batting except for pitching data.

Teams: more specific data about the teams.

Franchises: example, the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958 but all time franchise records apply going back into the 1800s. Another example: the original Washington Senators moved to Minneapolis in 1961 and renamed the team the Minnesota Twins. Similarly, the St. Louis Browns moved in 1954 and became the Baltimore Orioles.

Back to query by example. You open a blank query and drag in an "image" of tables with their fields. Let's say from my example the People and Batting tables. You drag your cursor from the PlayerID field in People to the same in Batting. Now you've got a one to many relationship. You cannot do this fundamental DBMS "join" in a spreadsheet. Now you do all sorts of wonderful things with all that data. You can also take small chunks of it and copy/paste it into a spreadsheet and do stuff that's more manageable there.

I do not know of any other end user program that does anything this powerful so easily. Microsoft Access generates SQL.

SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standardized programming language that's used to manage relational databases and perform various operations on the data in them. ... SQL became the de facto standard programming language for relational databases after they emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The user of Access can view and even edit the SQL that his query generates but that user has no need to do that.

I tell people that they should learn to use a spreadsheet, that it's the closest thing to programming for non techie people without learning to program. It can be used at work. But if not at work, it can be used in their own lives, sort of like learning to be an electrician, plumber, carpenter but not doing that as a profession. Such skills always come in handy. Same with knowing spreadsheets.

Access databases go beyond spreadsheets. They are not for everyone. But for single user work that exceeds the capability of a spreadsheet program, you cannot beat Access.

But I'd like to get away from my Windows 10 Microsoft Surface laptop and the stagnation that Microsoft has let impact Access. I'd like to stick with Google Docs on my Chromebook. So, we need Google to build its better version of Microsoft Access. Please.

Returned second Pixelbook ($300 off) this year.

Who actually wants Android apps on Chromebooks? TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2018

Pixelbook returned: not compelling and 2-in-1 laptops are silly. TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2018

I bought a Pixelbook again because it was $300 off. I haven't returned it yet. Unlike pretty much all reviewers I'm not all that impressed.
__________________________

I returned my second Pixelbook last night. Even at $699, $300 off, it wasn't worth it. Read my other two posts above.

I don't understand mixing a PC experience with that of a mobile device whose OS is designed for a small touch screen to run crappy little apps that do limited discreet functions not necessarily well.

Early on stuff like Microsoft Office was made to run on small mobile devices. Why? It's stupid. Who wants to create a spreadsheet in a phone or even a tablet?

Even the Google Blogger app on Android sucks. I always regret the few times I try using it and can't wait to get on my Chromebook to fix my post, which must be limited because I don't have decent access to substantial computer programs, not crappy apps.

Last but not least: who REALLY thinks these 2-in-1 flip laptop PCs are a good idea? If you watch a video review, when the PC touch screen is touched it moves backwards. It's not that stable for being touched, which means that you're going to get annoyed or tired of trying it. Even scrolling on the touch screen might become tedious. Maybe I'll actually find out if I get a new Chromebook with a touch screen that is larger than my current 13 inch
Chromebook. And, no, not a flip PC.

Who actually wants Android apps on Chromebooks?

Pixelbook returned: not compelling and 2-in-1 laptops are silly. TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 2018

I bought a Pixelbook again because it was $300 off. I haven't returned it yet. Unlike pretty much all reviewers I'm not all that impressed. I don't understand the fascination with the screen shaped like a 1955 TV, not like an HDTV and almost all PCs this millennium. Functionally, it does what my seven year old Toshiba Chromebook does. I've been using Chromebooks almost exclusively for several years. I like them a lot. And I never longed for Android apps on a Chromebook.

Apps are those crummy little computer programs that run on mobile phones. Why the heck would I want to run them on a computer?

I first got a Chromebook because I realized that 99% of the time I was in the browser, the Chrome browser. What was universally criticized as a weakness was actually the strength of the Chromebook: it was simple, secure and worked well for 99% of the stuff I was doing, which included using Google Docs online.

Every review for years had the same moronic criticism: you couldn't run Adobe Photoshop. Who the heck gave a rat's ass about that? I don't know anyone personally who runs stupid Photoshop.

The Microsoft Windows operating system runs computer programs, not crappy little apps. Chrome OS does not run computer programs and that's been acceptable all along.

Now Chrome OS can run Android apps in all their non glory. Watch a video review and see if they actually show the environment for launching these apps. Or if they show anything more than some moronic game designed to entertain some moron running it on his phone.

Which brings us to the stupidity of the 2 in 1 device, which flips and converts a laptop into a really heavy and unwieldy tablet. Does it also suddenly switch to Android so that you can run those crummy little apps properly? No.

This is why we still need Android tablets, which have been declared dead by people in the know. No, not overpriced iPads, which now seem less overpriced compared to other overpriced closed, proprietary Apple devices. We need Android tablets, which also run those crappy little phone apps. With a relatively small, light tablet we can relax and do some simple stuff that does not require a computer.

So far what I've seen of Android apps on the Pixelbook is not pretty but pretty much a mess. I've closed and removed some apps and returned to the browser version of their function. I wonder if the entire app environment can be removed.

P.S. The Pixelbook backlit keyboard:
Why doesn't it default to backlit?
Why doesn't it explicitly indicate how to turn on/off the keyboard light?
Why doesn't the system remember your backlit setting?
Why are the letters on the keys noticeably smaller than on a regular keyboard?
Why can't I see many of the backlit keys without shading the light with my hand?

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Pixelbook returned: not compelling and 2-in-1 laptops are silly.

Silly is a euphemism. I tried the $1,000 Google Pixelbook in tablet mode while in a prone position. It's a big, heavy, clumsy "tablet". Who the heck thinks this is a good idea? When you bend the screen all the way back against the top of the laptop, it doesn't suddenly start running Android. It just eliminates the keyboard, which is then exposed on the bottom of the newly formed "tablet". What are you supposed to do when you want to put it down? Unflip it so that the keyboard is not damaged?

The Pixelbook has one of those elongated screens, more vertical than that which we've been using for years. Another, who the heck thinks this is a good idea? Of all things, the Google Chrome browser seemed to be somewhat dysfunctional when resizing: the vertical scroll bar disappeared and some of the top of the screen, too. Gmail just didn't seem to fit on that Pixelbook screen, something that would seem pretty basic. How come all of those reviews that I had checked never addressed that? Maybe because they were too immersed in the screen brightness and keyboard, both of which were nice but not compelling.

I was more comfortable with the Toshiba 13 inch Chromebook that I've been using for a few years. My first Chromebook was an 11 inch Samsung. Both seemed natural and quick enough. The Pixelbook keyboard was backlit but that only presents in the dark. It also felt cramped, I guess because the Pixelbook is about an inch narrower, something to consider when evaluating any elongated screen. I like my Toshiba keyboard better.

I had also ordered the special Google pen for the Pixelbook. I never took it out of the box. I was already disappointed. I tried a couple of built in apps in "tablet" mode. No big deal. I like the idea of a touch screen for my Chromebook but not because I'm desperate to use Android apps.

Finally, much has been made of Google Assistant being built in. Functionally, it's the same as what I've had on my Android phones for years, isn't it? Or on Google Home? And on my Android tablet? My most recent tablet, the Nexus 9, died, which is the main reason I searched for an overall upgrade to another type of touch screen. A 2-in-1 laptop is not the answer and the Google Pixelbook is way too expensive to pretend otherwise. So, after two days I decided to return before it became unreturnable.

To Google's credit I have already received a message stating that I would be reimbursed in full, which is way better than some other companies that charge a 15% restocking fee. I used the Google supplied shipping label and lugged it to the Post Office today.

Google has stopped selling tablets. If you search the Google store for a tablet you are redirected to the Pixelbook. The tech intelligentsia have already concluded that the tablet is dead, that why would anyone want a tablet when he/she can have a 2-in-1 laptop. I think that the death of the tablet is greatly exaggerated.

Samsung sent its return shipping label but will still charge 15% restocking.

I called again and again almost fell into a hole but lucked out with someone who got permission from his supervisor to send the label directly to my gmail ID, instead of to the one with my domain, the same domain email ID to which Samsung had been sending all its other messages.

Oh, before I made that call, I sent a message to this guy:

Totally fruitless and aggravating phone conversation with the sales group that the next email wants me to talk to again. The sales person insisted that they had sent the return shipping label. I checked everywhere, including SPAM. No email from Samsung with any attachment.

Samsung could not confirm that the message had been sent or by which organization. I was told the matter was being referred to ... some organizational black hole. I tried calling again last night but Samsung was closed. I'll try again after posting this.

Samsung systems suck: multiple failed attempts to return its Chromebook Pro.

See previous post:

Returning Samsung Chromebook Pro: keyboard really sucks. REALLY sucks. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2017 10:47AM

Not only does Samsung have an embarrassingly bad keyboard in its expensive ($549.99) Chromebook Pro flip laptop but:

1. Samsung will probably charge me a 15% restocking fee: $82.50.
2. Samsung has such terrible internal systems that, despite multiple email messages through its website and a 42 minute phone call, it could not send me a FedEx return label.
3. Samsung may now take five more BUSINESS days to get the FedEx return label to me.

All this allows Samsung to keep my money longer and puts me in jeopardy of not returning the Samsung product within its 15 day limit. Samsung is totally in charge of this process with its really bad systems.

Do NOT buy this Samsung product and think really hard about buying any Samsung computer product because of the Samsung 15% restocking charge and its bad procedures, policies and, worst of all, its internal computer systems.

Returning Samsung Chromebook Pro: keyboard really sucks. REALLY sucks.

Samsung Chromebook Pro $549.99

Message sent to Samsung using its terrible online "email". Ridiculously convoluted and fragile. I had to constantly re-enter data.

I'd like to return. When I finally figured out how to get around your router connection anomaly and started using, I found that the criticisms of your keyboard were not severe enough. Your keyboard really sucks.

It's cramped and not conducive to writing. This results in having to many errors.

Oh, and this: couldn't get it to connect to my router. Finally after many failures and no error messages, just a blank stare, I tried using the plain router version, non 5G. That worked. So then I backed up and tried the 5G version again and it worked. What the heck?

Have to stop. My palms are aching and I have average size hands.

Recently I wanted another, larger Chromebook, preferably with something extra.

HP 14 inch with touch screen hit the spot.  I tried to order it on the HP website.  Could not.  Sent a message to HP about that, expecting to be contacted within minutes to seal a deal.  It took HP a couple of days.  By then I had ordered from Amazon:

My review on the Acer 15 inch Chromebook (CB5-571/C910):

Defective.  OS kept freezing.  Returned after two weeks.  Amazon's third party supplier refunded only $237 of $350 without explanation.  I filed a complaint with Amazon several days ago but without any action.   I'm very disappointed in Acer but even more with Amazon, which just sent me an email message asking me to write this review.  Amazon is oblivious to the fact that I have a grievance.  Argh!

Chrome OS: why do so many things, including from Google, not run?

I'm looking at a c/net thing about running Google Earth Pro for free on "PC or Mac".  No option for Linux.  OK, but what about Goggle's own PC operating system (OS) Chrome OS, which runs on Chromebooks?

It's pretty much fill-in-the-blank does not run on Chrome OS.  I recently cancelled subscriptions to streaming video services for NBA League Pass and mlb.tv because neither runs on Chrome OS.

How the heck can that be?

Development stuff does not run on Chrome OS.  If you want to set up an environment to write and test programs, including those that run on Chrome OS or Google's tablet/smartphone Android OS, as far as I know that cannot be done on Chrome OS.

What the heck?

purevpn failed on three PCs, worked on Android tablet.

purevpn now finally connects on my Android 5 Nexus 7 tablet and even stays connected all day using "any" location, which goes to Atlanta each time.  I'm in New York.  Able to break NBA blackout and see the Knicks!

purevpn drops connection on Windows 7 (with various protocols and locations) and both my Chromebooks to fixed locations: Miami and LA.  Chromebook connections last less than 30 minutes.  No useful notification that the connection dropped.

purevpn sponsored router from flashrouter.com failed to run streaming video of NBA games using Roku 3 box.  Router returned.  flashrouter support absurd.

purevpn support tries but seems to just follow a script.

unlocator.com - did not work

Both purevpn and unlocator are too concerned about movies and not sports.  A movie starts and if it stops, just start again.  Live sports cannot be viewed that way.  They are missing a big boat, especially concerning the local blackouts of the NBA and MLB.

At the link:

My VPN disconnects after every few minutes. What should I do?

There are multiple reasons which may cause the disconnection like:

1-Switching the Protocol: If you are experiencing disconnection issues, then change over between the protocols, i.e. PPTP, L2TP, SSTP and OpenVPN. Mostly, disconnection issues are broken up by switching the protocols.

2-Firewall: If switching protocols doesn’t help then check Router / Windows / 3rd Party Firewall settings. Disable your firewalls at first, temporarily and try again. Sometimes router firewalls cause the disconnection problems and internet activity issues because WiFi routers usually grind the VPN to a stop after a few minutes of use, plainly because they can’t keep up with SPI / Firewall turned on.

3-Mobile Credentials: Likewise, you may face disconnection issue if you use Mobile account credentials (username/password) on PC / Mac / Router etc. Mobile account doesn't cover PC / Mac / Router etc and only supports Mobile and Tablet.

4-Internet Connection: If you still face disconnection issues after switching between protocols and turning off firewalls, you have to check your network. If there is any glitch in your internet connection, you may have disconnection issues in such scenarios as well.

Thanks. On Windows I switched protocols. That didn't seem to matter. Another purevpn support person suggested that I disable my firewalls for diagnostic purposes. I refused. That seems out of the question, especially given the nature of the service that you provide.
I am using the Verizon FIOS router.
I do not know where the Chrome OS firewall is, even if I wanted to disable it, which I do not.
You must have a log of my connections and disconnects and the servers and protocols.

purevpn connections drop often: Windows 7 and now Chrome OS on two different Chromebooks.

  Hummer 02:37:14 pm

Please try switching between protocols i.e PPTP/L2TP on your windows then try again

Ironically, I finally got it working on my Android tablet.
Changed protocols several times and don't want to disable firewalls.
Using Verizon FIOS router.
Check my log. Username: xxxxxxxx
The connection to LA dropped during the chat just before you came on. I reconnected.
Now on Chromebook connected to oscar1 as before disconnect.
Was chatting with Deniz.

You are requested to disable the firewall
as firewall causes the disconnection

  Kenneth Matinale 02:42:37 pm

I do not know how to disable the Chrome OS firewall but do not want to do it. Since Windows has the had the problem the most times, it does not seem as if the OS firewall is the problem.

  Hummer 02:43:26 pm

You may simply disable the firewall of your router then try and check

The connection dropped during a purevpn chat. That's all I was doing.
I'm not fooling with my router.
I'll try at other locations but my guess is that the problem will persist.
If a router firewall can cause disconnects, the purevpn service does not seem very robust.
By the way, I had the flashrouter.com router for two days plugged into the Verizon router and had disconnections. flashrouter failed at streaming video of NBA games through a Roku box, which was the main reason I bought it. I then returned it.
I think we're done. Anything else?
OK. Bye.

Bottom line: they follow the script, which culminates with asking the customer to disable firewalls.

Today for the first time I got my Android 5 Nexus 7 tablet to connect to purevpn.  The one change I made was to let the server be assigned as "any".  Also, last night Google upgraded Android to 5.1 kernel version 3.1.10-gf5d7b8b, build number LMY47D

I connected my Android tablet several hours ago and it's still connected according to the purevpn app.  So if the problem was the Verizon FIOS router, then why is Android running purevpn and Chrome OS stopped running purevpn?  The only activity on the Chromebook when the purevpn connection dropped was my chat session with purevpn support, which could not have put much of a load on the connection.

Alert: I got suspicious and checked my Android tablet several hours later.  The purevpn app still shows me connected ... to Atlanta with a non-New York IP.  However:
- There is no VPN created among connections
- in the browser: wimi.com: What'sIsMyIP: 192.69.251.194    Same as in WiFi menu.

Apparently the purevpn Android app shows itself connected when it is not.
